Highfolk Regional Travel Mechanic

Folks Choice

The Highfolk region holds “Folks Choice” events, where the community is able to inform the future of story and gaming experience in the Free Lands of Highfolk. In the spring of 2026, the Folks Choice focuses on the region’s mechanic: the Highfolk Travel Mechanic. In the Baldman’s Forge (something akin to an unearthed arcana) the community can help inform game design.

The Travel Mechanic

Highfolk’s regional mechanic focuses on travel and exploration. It presents a brief travel montage between major locations during the adventure. Along the way, characters must make meaningful choices, rely on their skills, and face the dangers of the frontier. Successes and failures during the journey may shape the remainder of the adventure, for better or worse.

Insights from the Designers

The design of Highfolk’s mechanic draws inspiration from early edition hex crawls. The travel mechanic is designed as a modern homage to that style of play, adapted for the pacing and structure of 5.5E Organized Play adventures.

Community Input Wanted!

Players and DMs will have the opportunity to playtest the regional travel mechanics and provide feedback to the Highfolk Story Lead team. Dungeon Masters are encouraged to use it during their VDDW adventures, and after the session even provide players with this full document for review and feedback. BMG and the Highfolk Story Lead team will provide methods for players and Dungeon Masters to submit feedback, which will help determine the direction of this regional mechanic.

Thank you for playing and for helping shape the future of Highfolk.
