The Duchy of Urnst
Karll Lorinar, His Grace, Duke of Urnst, Warden of the Abbor-Alz is dying. At least, that’s what the gossip says. The truth is known only to those closest to him, but one thing is certain: he hasn’t been seen in public for weeks, and Urnst’s enemies are taking note. Sometimes called the Duke of Ravens because of decades spent mourning the death of his wife and child and his habit for dressing solely in black, Karll nevertheless led a fierce defense of his Duchy and its people. Without his leadership, previously quiet borders face new threats from emboldened foes. A few prominent citizens now sponsor efforts to address these challenges and advance their own influence, perhaps making their cases to succeed the heirless Duke, should his illness prove fatal
Southern Discomfort
The Southern Discomfort series of adventures is set along the Duchy of Urnst’s southwestern border with the Abbor-Alz, a region of sear hills and badlands populated by nomadic humanoid clans, monstrosities of unnatural origin, and marauding bands of ogres. It is the alarming rumors of a gathering ogre threat that have focused many eyes, including those of Urnst’s most powerful people, onto the region.
The Duchy maintains a small garrison there, but its focus is on the badlands and preventing whatever dangers come out of them from reaching the valuable and vulnerable farmlands beyond. Mercenaries, scallywags, profit seekers, and adventurers have traveled to the low hills separating the Duchy from the Abbor-Alz and strain the already taxed resources of the region. Even in the absence of an invading ogre army, such an unruly group in those conditions is likely to cause trouble.
